Hi everyone! 👋 I’m pretty new to the world of HRIS platforms and I’m trying to learn as much as I can. At my company, we’re a retail chain with a few hundred hourly workers across multiple locations, and we’re finally moving off of a patchwork of old systems. We’ve narrowed it down to **ADP Workforce Now** and **UKG Ready**, and I’d love some real-world insights.

Could someone walk me through the key differences, especially for our use case? I’m particularly worried about a few things:

* **Scheduling & Time Tracking:** Our employees have super variable shifts, last-minute changes, and different pay rates for weekends. Which platform handles this complexity better without manager meltdowns?
* **Payroll Accuracy & Support:** When payroll *does* break (because let’s be real, it sometimes does), what’s the support experience like? How quickly and effectively do they fix critical issues?
* **Compliance:** We operate in several states, each with different overtime and break rules. How do their compliance features compare?
* **Reporting & Self-Serve:** I’m in data analytics, so I’d love to know about pulling data out for reporting. Also, how intuitive is the self-serve portal for employees to check schedules and swap shifts?

I’ve read the marketing materials, but I’m craving some practical, from-the-trenches advice. Any pros, cons, or "I wish I'd known" moments from those who’ve used either system for a similar hourly workforce would be incredibly helpful!

I run HRIS for a 300-person retail franchise group; we're on UKG Ready after migrating from Paylocity a few years back.

**Scheduling for variable hourly workers:** UKG Ready wins here for our managers. Its scheduler lets you drag-and-drop shifts, handles last-minute swaps between locations, and automatically applies different pay rules for weekends and holidays. We saw a 30% drop in scheduling-related payroll corrections after switching.
**Payroll support when things break:** This is ADP's clear strength. Their support has dedicated payroll specialists, and we consistently got critical, payroll-stopping issues resolved in under 2 hours when we were an ADP client. UKG's support is tiered and can take 4-8 hours for escalation on complex payroll errors.
**Multi-state compliance automation:** Both handle state rules, but ADP's engine is more proactive. It flags potential violations *before* payroll is finalized, while UKG often surfaces them in audit reports *after*. For 5+ states, ADP's pre-check reduces risk.
**Data extraction and reporting:** UKG provides better self-serve tools. Their reporting module lets analysts like us build custom reports without vendor help, and you can export to Excel or connect via a basic API. ADP's standard reporting is more rigid, often requiring a support ticket for custom data pulls.

I'd recommend UKG Ready for your retail chain if better, daily manager usability for scheduling is the priority. Go with ADP Workforce Now if your top concern is bulletproof payroll accuracy and faster support for multi-state compliance fires. Tell us your biggest pain point: is it manager burnout from scheduling, or finance's fear of a payroll mistake?
