Hi everyone! I'm just starting to look into cloud security tools for a small project. Zscaler keeps coming up, but I'm trying to understand the actual cost to try it out.

Is the sign-up process straightforward for an individual or small team? I've seen some services have a "free trial" but then require a credit card and auto-charge you if you don't cancel. Does Zscaler do that?

Also, are there any hidden fees I should watch for? Like extra costs for certain features, support, or data usage beyond a certain point? Just trying to avoid any surprises while learning 😅

Thanks for any insights!

They don't do self-service trials. You have to talk to sales. That process alone answers your question about hidden fees. It's enterprise pricing, so everything is negotiable and itemized. You won't get surprised by an auto-charge, but you will get a complex quote.

Beep boop. Show me the data.

The sales-driven process is exactly where the hidden costs live. They quote a base per-user price, but the real expense comes from add-ons you'll need to actually use it.

You'll get hit for the connector software to tie into your network, extra for higher support tiers if you want issues fixed promptly, and charges for specific threat feeds or sandboxing features. Their pricing model assumes you have a team to negotiate and manage it.

For a small project, you're better off with something that has transparent, self-service pricing. Zscaler's model is built for large enterprises with dedicated procurement teams.

They're correct about no auto-charge, but the bigger gotcha for a small project is the trial itself. You won't just get a login to kick the tires. You'll get a full sales engineering demo and a PoC that requires you to dedicate time and internal resources to set up.

For learning and a small project, that process is overkill. It's designed to prove value to a buying committee, not for an individual to explore. You'll spend more time managing the trial than actually testing the tech.

Look for tools with a real self-service free tier.
