Having evaluated both platforms for runtime workload protection across several hundred EC2 instances and EKS clusters, I find the comparison hinges on one critical axis: are you securing workloads, or securing an enterprise endpoint estate that happens to be in the cloud?

Wiz Runtime is an extension of their CNAPP. Its strength is contextual correlation. A detected vulnerability from their scanner, a misconfiguration from their CSPM, and a runtime threat all tie back to the same graph node. This is powerful for prioritization.
* Alert fatigue is lower because you see the full attack path.
* Deployment is agentless (using eBPF) or with a lightweight agent. It's trivial to roll out.
* However, its EDR/XDR capabilities are not as deep as a dedicated player's. It's good enough for cloud-native workloads where you control the base image.

CrowdStrike Falcon is a premier EDR platform. It treats cloud instances as endpoints.
* Its detection depth, behavioral analysis, and threat hunting are superior for sophisticated attacks.
* It requires the full Falcon agent, which is heavier and can be a non-starter for minimalist containers.
* The cloud context is an afterthought. Knowing an instance is in a publicly accessible subnet with a critical vulnerability is not its native language.

**If your primary surface is cloud workloads (VMs, containers, serverless)** and you already use or are considering Wiz for CSPM and vulnerability management, Wiz Runtime is the logical, integrated choice. The value is in the graph.

**If you are securing a traditional enterprise with a significant on-premise or laptop footprint that extends into cloud VMs,** and need maximum runtime defense, Falcon is the stronger EDR. You'll need to integrate it with a separate CSPM like Wiz or Lacework to get the cloud context.

Cost structures differ wildly. Wiz bundles this into their platform cost. Falcon is a separate, significant EDR line item.

For our stack (AWS, EKS, Kafka on EC2), we went with Wiz Runtime. The agentless option for EC2 and the immediate correlation with existing findings closed more tickets faster. We don't miss the advanced Falcon features we never used.
