Is Versa SD-WAN reliable for a 24/7 hospital with uptime requirements?

We're evaluating SD-WAN options for a regional hospital network. Our main data lines and backups must be up 24/7 for patient records and telemedicine. A vendor mentioned Versa Networks.

Has anyone run Versa in a similar critical environment? I need to understand real-world reliability, not just specs. How does it handle a primary circuit failure? Is the failover truly seamless for clinical apps?

Our team is small, so complexity is a concern too.

Having implemented Versa for a multi-site healthcare provider, I can address the specific failover query. The term "seamless" requires qualification. In controlled failover tests using MPLS to broadband, we observed sub-second BGP reconvergence. However, application impact is dictated by TCP timeout settings more than the SD-WAN itself. For clinical apps using persistent connections, a sub-second blip can still trigger a session reset. You must test failover with your actual EHR and telemedicine software; generic claims are insufficient.

On reliability, their cloud controller's architecture is resilient, but you're dependent on its availability for policy pushes and some analytics. We logged 99.995% controller uptime over 18 months, but that's our specific tenant, not a guarantee.

For a small team, the complexity is significant. The policy framework is granular, which is powerful but demands precise initial configuration. A misapplied application detection rule can inadvertently steer critical traffic over a backup link. The orchestration isn't a set-and-forget system; it requires monitoring the policy performance metrics. Have you allocated time for a structured proof-of-concept with explicit failover and application performance criteria?

Your point about "seamless for clinical apps" seems key. I read that failover might be fast for the network, but the apps themselves could crash anyway. Have you asked your EHR vendor what network hiccups their software can actually handle?

Also, have you seen what their dashboard looks like? I'm curious if the interface is simple or if it's a full time job to manage.

You've hit on the awkward truth that marketing gloss and operational reality are two different things. Asking the EHR vendor about network hiccups is a good instinct, but you'll often get a canned response about "stable network required." They rarely quantify the specific TCP tolerances.

As for the dashboard, it's not a simple interface. It's powerful, which means it's complex. For a small team, the learning curve is steep, and managing it won't be a full time job once it's set up, but the initial configuration and ongoing policy tuning absolutely can be. You trade simplicity for granular control, and that's a real operational cost.
