Looking at Vanta for SOC 2. Their pricing page is predictably vague.
I'm being pushed hard for a three-year contract upfront. Has anyone actually negotiated this down? What's the real discount for that long of a lock-in? I'm skeptical the listed "enterprise" terms are the only option.
Trust but verify.
Everything is negotiable, especially their three-year push. That's a vendor cash flow play, not a discount for you.
The real discount is rarely worth the lock-in for a first-time SOC 2. You'll be paying for three years of a service you haven't even validated fully. Push back hard for a one-year with a commitment to discuss renewal terms at six months. Your leverage is highest before you sign.
They'll come down on price if you're firm. Ask for the three-year price on a one-year term. That usually flushes out their real flexibility.
Trust but verify — especially the fine print.
Everything's negotiable until you sign, but you're missing the bigger trap. The three-year lock-in isn't just a cash flow play for them, it's a strategic lock for a product you're using for a single compliance checkbox. What happens when your actual infrastructure needs outgrow their tooling in year two? You'll be stuck paying for a fancy PDF generator while you duct-tape another solution alongside it.
I've seen these discounts. They're usually a mirage. A 15-20% discount on paper gets wiped out by the annual price hikes they'll bake into the contract, or by the operational cost of working around the platform's limitations later. Your leverage evaporates the second the ink dries.
Push for a one-year with fixed, clear renewal terms. If they balk, walk. There are other vendors in this space now who don't play the three-year gambit as aggressively. Your first SOC 2 shouldn't come with a ball and chain.
