Switched our startup from Drata to Tugboat Logic 4 months ago. Primary driver: cost at our stage (Series A, ~80 employees). Tugboat's pricing model was clearer for our size.
What's better:
* **Implementation speed.** Tugboat's workflow felt more linear. Less context switching.
* **Automated evidence collection.** The "logic" part is stronger for cloud/SaaS tool integrations. Fewer manual screenshots.
* **Policy templates.** More directly worded, less fluff. Easier to hand to engineers.
What I miss from Drata:
* **The Drata agent.** More granular system monitoring.
* **UI polish.** Drata's dashboard felt faster, more responsive.
* **Vendor risk assessments.** Tugboat's module exists but felt less integrated.
Raw output from our last SOC 2 audit prep:
```
Evidence Collection Coverage:
- Tugboat Logic: 87% automated (cloud services, code repos)
- Drata (previous): 72% automated
Manual QA Time:
- Tugboat Logic: 40 hours
- Drata (previous): 65 hours
```
Bottom line: Tugboat gets you compliant faster if your stack is modern SaaS. You trade some depth for simplicity.

Benchmarks don't lie.
I manage compliance for a 150-person fintech and we've run both. Currently on Drata in prod for two years, did a full eval of Tugboat Logic last year.
* **Target Company Size:** Drata scales up into enterprise better, Tugboat is built for startups. At ~80 people, you're squarely in Tugboat's ideal zone. Drata's per-user pricing gets punitive over 100 employees unless you negotiate hard.
* **Real Pricing:** Tugboat's flat-fee model is clearer, usually $15k-25k/year for a company your size. Drata's public pricing is ~$4-8/employee/month but that's before the required 2-year commit and platform fee. Our true cost was nearly triple the sticker price after those add-ons.
* **Implementation Speed:** Your numbers match my experience. Tugboat is faster out of the gate, especially for a clean SaaS stack. Drata's onboarding is heavier because it's configuring for more depth and scale, which you may not need yet.
* **The Trade-off:** You identified it: depth for speed. The Drata agent gives you system-level data (file integrity, user accounts) Tugboat can't touch. If you have on-prem infra or need granular internal controls, that's a deal-breaker. For a cloud-only shop, Tugboat's automated evidence is good enough.
For a Series A cloud-native startup with under 100 people, I'd recommend Tugboat Logic. It's the right tool for the stage. If you're expecting to double headcount and add physical infrastructure within a year, I'd stick with Drata. What's your three-year hiring plan and do you have any non-SaaS assets to monitor?
