After a year of using Tenable Cloud Security across our AWS and Azure environments, I wanted to share some candid thoughts from our security team's perspective. We adopted it during a push for better cloud visibility, moving away from a more manual, script-heavy process.
The good stuff first:
* **Agentless scanning** was a huge win for onboarding. Getting immediate visibility without fighting over agent deployments smoothed the rollout significantly.
* **The compliance mappings** (CIS, NIST) are thorough. Generating reports for auditors became a task that takes hours instead of days.
* **Vulnerability prioritization** is solid. The contextual risk scores, considering cloud asset importance, help our small team focus on what actually matters.
However, we've hit some real snags:
* **The learning curve on policies** is steep. Fine-tuning scans to avoid noise (like flagging development environments with the severity of production) took a lot of trial and error.
* **Cost forecasting** feels opaque. While the tool shows us assets, predicting our next bill as we scale has been surprisingly difficult. We've had a few "sticker shock" moments.
* **Remediation workflow** feels clunky outside the tool. It surfaces the problem well, but the handoff to our cloud engineering teams via Jira still requires a lot of manual steps. I wish the integration was more seamless.
Overall, it's made us far more confident in our cloud security posture. The coverage and compliance features are excellent. But it's not a "set and forget" system—it demands continuous policy tuning and you need to keep a close eye on the cost side of things.
