Hi everyone! 👋 I've been deep in the weeds for the last quarter evaluating zero-trust remote access solutions for our marketing and sales ops teams at my Fortune 500. We have a globally distributed team of revenue ops folks, analysts, and field marketers who need seamless, secure access to internal tools, dashboards, and of course, our core marketing automation and CRM platforms.
The shortlist came down to **Tailscale** and **Twingate**, and we ended up running a limited pilot with both. I wanted to share our team's hands-on experience, especially from a marketing/sales ops lens where our needs might differ slightly from pure IT or dev teams.
Our key requirements were:
* **Frictionless onboarding** for non-technical team members (think field marketing, sales ops analysts).
* **Secure access** to cloud-hosted tools (like Marketo Engage, Tableau, our data enrichment APIs) and on-prem legacy systems (our old Eloqua reporting server, for instance).
* **Simple policy management** that we could co-manage with IT without creating a bottleneck.
* **Robust logging** for compliance (SOX, GDPR) β we need to prove who accessed what and when for audit trails.
* **Reliability** for demos and critical campaign launches β no drops during a live webinar setup!
Hereβs what we found:
**Tailscale** felt like magic for the technically inclined. The concept of a mesh VPN that "just works" is brilliant.
* The strength is undeniable in its peer-to-peer connections and the simplicity of just installing a client. For our devs in martech who are in AWS and GitHub all day, it was a dream.
* However, for our less technical marketers, the abstract "network" concept was a hurdle. Explaining "why" they had to install an app and sign in with SSO to access a simple dashboard caused some support tickets. The access control lists (ACLs) are powerful but felt more granular than we needed for basic user-to-application access.
**Twingate** approached it differently, with a focus on securing access to specific resources (applications, servers) rather than placing users on a network.
* This "resource-centric" model resonated better with our business users. We could say, "Here's the link to the Tableau server," and Twingate handled the secure tunnel in the background. The reduction in support questions was noticeable.
* The setup for Administrators was very straightforward. Defining resources felt analogous to how we manage user permissions in our CRM β a mental model our ops team already has. The logging and integration with our existing SIEM for those compliance audits was also more immediately intuitive.
**Our verdict for this use case:** We are moving forward with **Twingate** for the broader business team. The user experience for non-technical staff and the administrative simplicity for resource-based access won out. That said, we've actually kept **Tailscale** for our martech and data engineering squad, as it's a better fit for their need to interact with a wider range of ephemeral dev resources and servers.
I'm incredibly curious if any other large-company marketing or sales ops professionals have gone through a similar evaluation. Did you prioritize user experience over technical elegance? How did you handle the split needs between technical and business teams? Would love to compare notes on pilot rollout strategies and any gotchas we might have missed!
