Just finished testing Secureframe's new auditor portal feature against our typical SOC 2 Type II prep workflow. We've been using Secureframe for about a year, and the pre-audit evidence collection was always the bottleneck. The promise of a dedicated portal for auditors to directly access everything sounded like a game-changer.
So, I set up a mock audit with a colleague playing the auditor role. Here's my initial take:
**The Good:**
* **Single source of truth:** The auditor had a direct, read-only link to our compliance workspace. No more scrambling to zip and share 50 different policy PDFs and screen recordings.
* **Structured evidence view:** They could filter controls by status (compliant, non-compliant, not tested) and see linked evidence immediately. This is much cleaner than our old shared drive folder.
* **Comment threading:** The ability to have discussions on specific controls or pieces of evidence within the portal itself kept everything contextual. No more lost email threads asking for clarifications on "Evidence_File_Final_v3.pdf".
**The Hiccups & Questions:**
* **Auditor onboarding friction:** It's still a new workflow for auditors themselves. My "auditor" had a few moments of confusion on navigation. I wonder if real audit firms will embrace this quickly, or if we'll need to do a walkthrough each time.
* **Granularity of access:** Can we restrict an auditor to *only* the evidence for the specific controls in scope for, say, a SOC 2, and hide our HIPAA or ISO 27001 work? I couldn't find a way to create "view-only slices" of the platform.
* **Does it actually speed it up?** For the evidence gathering phase, **absolutely yes**. The real time-saver was eliminating the back-and-forth file requests. However, the actual *audit testing* time (them reviewing the evidence) felt similar. The benefit is organizational clarity, not necessarily a shorter audit duration.
Has anyone else run a real audit through this yet? I'm particularly curious about:
* Auditor feedback from their side.
* If you can customize what an auditor sees per engagement.
* Whether this actually translated into a lower audit fee (since it should reduce their manual collection work).
