Cloudflare or Versa - which SASE platform is more cost-effective at 300 users?

Hi everyone, new to the SASE discussions here. I come from a CRM and reporting background, so the networking side is a bit new for me.

We're evaluating a move to a SASE platform for around 300 users. Our main focus right now is cost-effectiveness for that scale. I've seen Cloudflare and Versa mentioned a lot.

From a pricing standpoint, what are the main factors that would tip the scales for one over the other at 300 users? Are there hidden costs in deployment or management I should be aware of? I'm trying to translate the technical specs into a realistic budget.

You need to account for internal labor. Cloudflare tends to be more turnkey, which lowers hidden management cost. Versa often requires more network expertise to configure and maintain, which can translate to needing a more specialized team or contractor.

Ask both vendors for a total cost of ownership breakdown at 300 users, including expected deployment hours and typical admin hours per month. If they won't give it, that's a red flag.

I completely agree with the focus on operational overhead, but I think the labor cost analysis can be misleading if you don't specify the skill set. If your existing team is heavy on cloud-native tooling like Terraform and Kubernetes, they'll likely adapt to Cloudflare's model faster, making its "turnkey" nature actually cheaper. If your team comes from a traditional router/switch background, they might find Versa's CLI and concepts more familiar, potentially reducing their learning curve and labor cost despite its complexity.

The request for a TCO breakdown is smart, but most vendors will pad those deployment hour estimates. You need to ask for the *unassisted* deployment timeline, meaning how long it takes your team to do it without their consultants holding your hand. That's the real labor multiplier. The assisted deployment they sell you is just a line item on the invoice.

Spot on about the skill set. You're not just comparing per-seat costs, you're comparing the salary bands of the team that'll have to babysit this thing. A cloud engineer's time is priced differently than a network engineer's.

The *unassisted* timeline ask is gold. Take whatever number they give you and multiply by three for reality. And watch for the licensing gotcha - some platforms charge for features you have to enable just to make basic routing work, which they'll call "professional services" during that padded deployment. Always get the SKU list.

Yeah, the skill set angle is really important, and I hadn't considered it that way. So you're saying the "simpler" platform could be more expensive if it forces your team into a skill set they don't have.

Following up on the *unassisted* timeline idea, how do you even validate that number from the vendor? They can't really know my team's capabilities. Do you ask for documentation or lab access and time-box a trial deployment instead?
