Our FinOps team just finished a 3-month trial of Rapid7 InsightCloudSec, and we had to make a crucial decision: configure the platform for real-time alerting on cost anomalies and security misconfigurations, or stick with a consolidated daily digest.

We went all-in on real-time for cost-related events (like a sudden 50% spike in S3 storage costs in a single region) and kept the daily digest for lower-severity security findings. The results? We caught and killed a misconfigured dev workload that was about to cost us $1,200/month within 30 minutes of deployment. Real-time for cost literally paid for the tool in the first week.

But for our security engineers, the constant pings from real-time were overwhelming and led to alert fatigue. The daily summary report at 8 AM gives them a prioritized, actionable list.

I'm curious how other teams are splitting this:

* Are you using real-time alerts for everything, or segmenting by alert type?
* What's your threshold for triggering a real-time cost alert? (We use anything projected to exceed $500/month unexpectedly).
* Has anyone found a sweet spot with a hybrid approach like we did?

Would love to hear your real-world numbers and what actually works for your workflow.

I'm a junior IT ops person at a 60-person SaaS company, and we use Datadog for our monitoring with a similar hybrid setup.

**Fit / team size**: Real-time works for small, focused teams like our 3-person FinOps squad. For our 5-person security group, it's noise. Daily digests scale better for groups handling hundreds of findings.
**Real pricing**: Real-time alerting cost us more. With Datadog, high-frequency checks and webhook alerts added about 20% to our monthly bill versus just scheduled reports.
**Deployment / tuning effort**: Real-time requires way more tuning upfront. We spent probably 15 hours dialing in cost alert thresholds to avoid false positives. The daily digest reports took an hour to set up.
**Where it breaks**: Real-time breaks when people go offline. We missed a critical alert over a weekend before setting up on-call rotations. The digest waits for you, so it's more fault-tolerant for teams without 24/7 coverage.

I'd pick the hybrid approach, same as you. My recommendation depends entirely on team size and if you have someone on-call. If you don't have weekend coverage, real-time for cost is still worth it, but make sure it texts a phone.
