Looking at the cloud security posture management (CSPM) landscape feels like choosing which overpriced, proprietary fortress to lock your data in. Rapid7’s InsightCloudSec is the usual enterprise fare: promises the world, charges for the air, and makes egress a tactical nightmare. The usual suspects people suggest—Wiz or Prisma Cloud—are just different flavors of the same vendor-lock-in smoothie.
So, let’s actually talk alternatives. I’m not interested in another platform that requires a “call our sales team” to see real pricing or that uses proprietary agents you can’t audit. I want tools that are transparent, cost-effective, and don’t treat your cloud as their future revenue stream.
What’s out there that’s actually worth evaluating?
* **Open Source / Self-Hosted:** Tools like **ScoutSuite** or **Prowler** (for AWS). They give you the core assessment without the SaaS subscription. The trade-off is you build and maintain the pipeline, but you own the data and the process. No secret data exfiltration to a vendor’s “research cloud.”
* **Niche or Emerging Commercial:** **Orca Security** (agentless, but still a full platform) and **Lacework** get mentions, though they’re marching down the same feature-bloat path. **Dig Security** (now part of Cisco…) for data-centric security. The key question for any of these is: can you get a clear, itemized bill, and what’s their data ingestion model?
* **The Cloud-Native Baseline:** Don’t forget the cloud providers’ own tools—AWS Security Hub, Azure Defender, GCP Security Command Center. They’re often basic and designed to keep you in their walled garden, but they’re “free” and integrated. Useful as a baseline, but never sufficient.
The real pitfall is assuming you need a monolithic platform. Most shops would be better served stitching together a few focused, transparent tools than signing a seven-figure deal for a dashboard that alerts you about misconfigured S3 buckets you could find with a script.
What are people actually using that doesn’t require a vendor’s permission to leave?
