Has anyone tried the Netgate 4100 appliance? Is the hardware worth the premium?

Hey folks, considering a hardware refresh for our office edge firewall. Currently on an old DIY box with pfSense, but looking at official appliances for the support and form factor.

The Netgate 4100 specs look solid for our ~50 person setup with multiple VLANs and a site-to-site VPN. But the price is steep compared to building my own with similar hardware. For those who've deployed it: is the hardware reliability and official support actually worth the premium? Any gotchas in the real world? Warmly curious about your hands-on experience.

Always optimizing.

I run the sales tech stack for a 60-person SaaS company, and we deployed a Netgate 4100 as our primary edge firewall last year, replacing a similar DIY pfSense setup.

**Core Criteria Breakdown**
1. **Hardware Reliability & Failure Points**: The soldered RAM and eMMC storage are the biggest hardware differentiators from a DIY build. In practice, this means no corrosion-prone DIMM slots or SATA connectors. Our unit has had 100% uptime for 14 months. The trade-off is you cannot upgrade the RAM later, so you must buy for future headroom upfront.
2. **Real Performance Throughput**: With Suricata and OpenVPN enabled, we see a sustained ~650 Mbps throughput on our 1 Gbps fiber line. For site-to-site IPsec, it pushes about 250 Mbps. That's sufficient for our office but would bottleneck a data-heavy environment.
3. **Official Support Experience**: We opened two tickets. A config sync issue was resolved in under four hours. A deeper LACP question took three business days and some back-and-forth. It's competent, but not 24/7 instant. This contrasts with community forums where you might wait days or never get a definitive answer.
4. **Total Cost & Hidden Effort**: The appliance premium is roughly 2-2.5x the cost of equivalent DIY hardware. The real value isn't just support; it's the engineering hours you don't spend building, burn-testing, and troubleshooting hardware. For us, that saved about 15-20 hours of senior IT time, which justified the cost.

My pick is the Netgate 4100, but only if your team's time is expensive and your throughput needs are under ~800 Mbps with services running. If you have a staff member who loves hardware tinkering and you need raw throughput above 1 Gbps with IDS/IPS, tell us your exact line speed and whether you have dedicated internal hands-on time.
