Hi everyone — I’ve noticed a lot of threads comparing specs and features between FortiGate and Palo Alto, but I think the real conversation we should be having is about total cost of ownership over a realistic lifespan. It’s easy to get caught up in the sticker price of the hardware, but that’s just the beginning.

I recently helped a mid-sized SaaS company evaluate both the FortiGate 600F and a comparable Palo Alto PA-3200 series over a 5-year horizon. The initial hardware/software quote for Palo Alto was indeed higher, but when we factored in operational overhead, licensing granularity, and even downtime for misconfigurations, the picture changed. Palo Alto’s policy management and visibility tools reduced their mean time to resolution (MTTR) on security incidents significantly, which saved them real money in staff hours.

On the flip side, FortiGate’s licensing bundles can be simpler and sometimes more economical upfront, especially if you need a wide range of features. But have you found that the management and troubleshooting time evens that out? I’m particularly curious about your experiences with:
- Operational labor costs: Which platform took more time to manage day-to-day and during upgrades?
- Hidden costs: Did you encounter unexpected costs for training, professional services, or add-on subscriptions later?
- Renewal surprises: How did support and subscription renewals compare after years 3 and 5?

Let’s move beyond the datasheet and share some real-world numbers and stories. It would help a lot of folks making this decision now.
