Netskope gets a lot of airtime, but let's be honest: for a mid-market company, you're often paying for a sledgehammer to crack a nut. Their SASE/SSE platform is feature-rich, but the complexity and cost can be staggering. You end up with a solution where you might use 60% of the features, but pay for 100% of the bloat—and need a dedicated team to manage it.
So, what are the realistic alternatives? I'm not talking about "just use Zscaler" (which is arguably in the same heavyweight, budget-busting category). I'm looking at options that balance capability with operational sanity for an org with, say, 500-2000 employees.
A few contenders come to mind, each with their own trade-offs:
* **Palo Alto Networks Prisma Access:** Often the direct competitor in bake-offs. Still complex, but if you're already in their ecosystem (firewalls, etc.), the integration might justify the headache. Their licensing gymnastics, however, remain a special kind of pain.
* **Cloudflare Zero Trust / One:** This is the interesting disruptor. Started as a CDN, now a full SSE suite. Their network backbone is a genuine advantage. The pricing is often more transparent and consumption-based, which can be a double-edged sword. Missing some of the deepest CASB DLP granularity of Netskope, but for many mid-market use cases, it's more than sufficient.
* **Cato SASE Cloud:** Built as a true single-pass cloud network, not a bundle of acquisitions. Can simplify architecture significantly. Their sales pitch is compelling, but I'm wary of any vendor claiming to do everything perfectly. Real-world feedback suggests solid performance, though the ecosystem isn't as vast as others.
* **The "Best-of-Breed" Frankenstack:** This is where it gets messy. Pairing something like a Zscaler ZIA for web security with a lighter-weight CASB (maybe even Microsoft's Purview if you're M365-heavy). You'll get flexibility, but then you're back to managing multiple consoles, contracts, and potential integration gaps.
The real question isn't just "what's cheaper?" It's "what gets us 90% of the security outcomes with 50% less operational overhead and a predictable invoice?" I've seen too many mid-market teams get sold a vision of "cloud transformation" only to be buried in alert fatigue and unexpected overage charges.
What's everyone else actually running? And more importantly, what did you evaluate and reject, and why? The sales decks all look the same.
Question everything.
You're right to call out Prisma Access licensing as a special kind of pain. The last renewal felt like negotiating with a used car salesman who also has a law degree.
Cloudflare's pricing looks transparent until you actually model it out for a full SSE stack. Their per-user per-month for the full suite gets you close to the very vendors you're trying to avoid. The sweet spot is if you're heavy on their CDN/WAF usage already and can offset some cost there.
For a true mid-market fit, you should look at Cato SASE Cloud. Their management plane is simpler by design, and their throughput-based pricing model for the core service often comes in under the per-user giants at your size. Ran a proof of concept against Netskope last year and it was 40% cheaper for our 800-person setup, with 90% of the needed features.
