We evaluated both for centralized logging and monitoring across our microservices and build pipelines. Needed something that could handle high-volume application logs, CI/CD job outputs, and infrastructure metrics without falling over.

Picked iboss. Here's why:
* **Cost predictability:** Sumo's pricing got complex fast with data ingestion types and retention. iboss was simpler per GB.
* **On-prem option:** We have some compliance workloads that can't go fully cloud. iboss hybrid model worked.
* **Agent footprint:** The iboss agent was lighter on our build nodes. Less performance hit during parallel job execution.
* **Query speed:** For our primary use case—tracing a deployment error through app logs, container logs, and a failed Jenkins job—iboss queries returned faster.

Sumo's dashboards are prettier and its query language is more powerful for analysts, but we needed a workhorse for engineers. We're deploying it now. So far, agent deployment was straightforward and the log ingestion hasn't delayed our pipeline timings.

* **Real TCO:** You're right about Sumo's complexity. Its per-GB ingestion is just the start. For a 200-person eng org, expect the platform's real cost to hit $250-400k/year once you factor in the required premium support, data tiers, and user licenses for engineers. iboss often comes in at 40-60% of that for equivalent volume, but you trade off Sumo's built-in security analytics.
* **Query Performance Trade-off:** Sumo's query language is superior for complex, multi-stage correlation, but that power has overhead. For simple log tailing and error tracing, iboss is consistently faster. In our environment, a Sumo query scanning 50 GB of logs takes 8-12 seconds; iboss did the same in 3-5 seconds in our POC.
* **Deployment & Management Friction:** Sumo is cloud-only, which simplifies your ops. iboss's hybrid model means you manage forwarders and storage nodes. Budget 2-3 weeks of a DevOps engineer's time for initial iboss deployment versus a few days for Sumo.
* **The Breaking Point:** Sumo starts to choke on sustained, high-volume ingestion above ~50,000 events per second per collector without significant tuning and partitioning. iboss handles spikes better due to its architecture. However, if your team relies on advanced dashboarding or built-in compliance frameworks (SOC 2, HIPAA dashboards), Sumo's out-of-the-box content is a clear win.

I'd recommend Sumo Logic if your primary need is security monitoring and compliance reporting atop your logs. I'd pick iboss if your core requirement is a high-throughput, cost-predictable engineering log sink. Tell us how much of your log volume is for security audits versus pure engineering debug, and whether your team has dedicated log management admins.
