Everyone's rushing to the cloud like it's a fire sale on sanity. So we drank the Kool-Aid and migrated our QRadar deployment to their SaaS offering. Two years later, we're back in our own data center, nursing a migraine and a significantly lighter budget.
The promise was less overhead. What we got was a locked-down environment where every meaningful operational query felt like negotiating with a brick wall. Need to check a specific low-level processing detail? Hope you like their curated logs, because you're not getting near the actual components. Custom integrations that worked flawlessly on-prem? Now you're filing tickets and waiting for a "security review" that takes longer than the sprint you needed it in.
```python
# Example: Trying to debug a custom DSM that parsed our legacy auth logs.
# On-prem, you could tail /var/log/qradar.log and see the raw parser output.
# In SaaS? You get this from the API, if you're lucky.
response = qradar_saas_api.get_parsing_status(log_source_id=123)
print(response)
# {'status': 'PROCESSING', 'details': 'No further information available.'}
# Brilliant. Really helps pinpoint why it's ingesting zero events.
```
The cost model is a masterpiece of obfuscation. It starts competitive, then the "committed use" tiers bite you. A sudden spike in EPS? That's not just a performance concern anymore, it's a direct line-item invoice shock. At least on-prem, once the hardware is depreciated, the marginal cost of an extra gigabyte of log data is roughly zero.
And let's talk about "managed." It's managed in the sense that they manage to prevent you from doing anything useful during an outage. Their status page becomes your new homepage, and you get to explain to your CISO that the "industry-leading SIEM" is down because of a multi-tenant database issue in a region you didn't choose.
The grass looked greener, but it was just astroturf over a subscription trap. We moved back, ate the re-implementation cost, and now we sleep better. Sometimes the devil you know, with root access, is better.
