Looking at SIEMs and the usual two names that come up for "mid-market" are QRadar and LogRhythm. I've run the numbers on both, and the sticker shock isn't the half of it.
The upfront licensing for both will make your CFO wince, but the real gut-punch with QRadar comes from the ancillary costs. You think you're buying a SIEM, but you're really buying into the IBM ecosystem tax.
* **Deployment:** QRadar wants its own VMs, its own storage, its own everything. That's extra infrastructure cost and admin overhead right off the bat. LogRhythm's all-in-one appliance model (while not perfect) at least simplifies the initial footprint.
* **Hidden Data Tax:** QRadar's pricing is per EPS/GB. In healthcare, a single imaging system hiccup can blast a log spike that costs you real money. LogRhythm's user-based licensing is at least predictable, even if you outgrow it.
* **The "Content" Trap:** Need a custom parser or a compliance report pack for some niche medical device? With IBM, that's often a "professional services engagement." With LogRhythm, their community library is more accessible, though quality varies.
For a shop our size, the operational cost is the killer. QRadar feels like it needs a dedicated admin to baby it. LogRhythm's UI is less of a labyrinth for the junior analyst who also has to handle firewall rules.
So, the real question isn't which one is "better" in a vacuum. It's which one lets us sleep at night without checking the cloud bill, and which one we can actually get value from without a PhD in IBMology.
