Just migrated a mid-market client off a legacy SIEM and into Chronicle. Their sales pitch heavily emphasized the bundled SOAR capabilities as a "force multiplier." After three months of implementation hell, my verdict is clear: it's a checkbox feature, not a ready-to-use solution for teams without a dedicated security engineering squad.
The automation builder is rigid. If you're used to the visual workflow builders in dedicated SOAR platforms or even Power Automate, Chronicle's YAML/JSON-heavy approach is a brick wall. Want to enrich an alert with a simple external API call? That's a custom script you're writing and maintaining. The out-of-the-box playbooks are superficial—mostly just status changes and basic notifications.
My main gripes:
* **Integration depth is lacking.** The "third-party integrations" are often just for ingesting alerts, not for bidirectional action. You can't easily push a containment action back to your endpoint tool without significant customization.
* **The learning curve is for engineers, not analysts.** Your security team needs to be comfortable with code-like logic and version control for playbooks. That's not most SMB teams.
* **Hidden labor cost:** The promised "automated response" shifts the work from manual investigation to playbook development, debugging, and maintenance. You're trading one time sink for another.
The core Chronicle SIEM for log retention and search? Solid. But they're selling the SOAR component as something it's not for the sub-enterprise crowd. You'd be better off with Chronicle for detection and a separate, more mature SOAR or even a well-built no-code automation platform for response.
We're now looking at layering a dedicated SOAR tool on top, which defeats the whole "unified platform" value prop. Feels like we paid a premium for a demo feature.
