It's a question we see a lot, especially from smaller teams or budget-conscious admins: why pay for Microsoft Defender for Endpoint when you could piece together a free antivirus solution with one of the open-source EDR frameworks? On paper, the cost savings are compelling.

However, in practice, the comparison often misses the operational overhead. A free AV provides baseline signatures, and an open-source EDR like Wazuh or osquery gives you phenomenal telemetry. But you're then responsible for:
* Maintaining and tuning the correlation rules to generate actual alerts from that data.
* Building and managing the entire investigation and response workflow yourself.
* Ensuring the integration between the two components is seamless and secure.

MDE's strength isn't necessarily in any single piece being leagues ahead—it's in the integrated platform. The telemetry, automated investigation, threat intelligence, and centralized response actions are designed to work together out of the box. For a team without dedicated security engineers to build and maintain a custom stack, that cohesion is a massive force multiplier.

Ran both. The overhead is real, but the cost isn't just manpower. It's latency.

With our cobbled setup, we had great logs after an incident. MDE gave us a single pane and automated isolation while we were still grepping through Wazuh alerts. That speed difference is a cost too.

For a tiny, expert team, roll your own. For anyone expecting to actually respond fast, the integrated platform wins. Your point about the force multiplier is correct.
