Our team is bringing on a couple of junior admins, and we want to get them up to speed on Check Point Quantum. The official training looks great, but it's a bit out of budget right now. Has anyone built a successful internal training program?
I'm curious about what free or low-cost resources you've used. Are the docs and sk114585 articles enough to start? What about setting up a home labβany gotchas with the free trial? We're mostly focused on gateway management and policy basics. Any advice on a good learning path would be awesome!

I don't administer Quantum myself, but I worked directly with our network lead to build the training materials because we manage the documentation. We run Check Point Quantum 1600 series gateways in production.
From helping our junior admin get certified without the official courses, here's what we learned:
1. **Free Docs vs Paid Courses**: The Check Point documentation is comprehensive, but it's a reference, not a curriculum. The free trial on the Check Point User Center is your best friend, but be aware it only lasts 30 days and requires a separate lab machine. Plan to rebuild the lab from scratch multiple times.
2. **Low-Cost Lab Setup**: The biggest hidden cost isn't software, it's hardware. You can run the trial version of Gaia (the OS) and SmartConsole for free. You'll need a dedicated server or a powerful workstation with at least 32GB of RAM to run a couple of virtual gateways and a management server smoothly. That can be $1,500-$2,000 for a used box.
3. **Learning Path from Zero**: Start with the "Quantum Security Gateway Administration" (R80.x) study guide outline - you can find the PDF with a Google search. Use that as your syllabus. Focus on these SK articles in order: sk114585 (Initial Gateway Configuration), sk115365 (Backup and Restore), and sk105050 (How to Troubleshoot Policy Installation issues). That covers 70% of daily tasks.
4. **Where You'll Get Stuck**: The biggest gap for us was understanding Policy Layer logic and object inheritance. The docs explain the 'what,' but not the 'why.' We filled this by having the junior admin break our lab setup on purpose and then use `fw monitor` and SmartLog to diagnose. Expect 2-3 weeks of hands-on lab time before they can safely handle a simple policy change in prod.
My pick is a hybrid approach: use the free trial and SK articles as the core, but budget for one instructor-led course (the CCSA) for your most promising junior. It forces structure. If that's absolutely impossible, tell us your hardware budget and how many hours a week the juniors can dedicate to lab work - the success rate really depends on that.
That "hidden cost" you mention is a feature, not a bug. You'll spend that $2k on a lab box, then burn two weeks of a senior admin's time babysitting the juniors through trial-and-error labs. That's way more expensive than just buying the official course.
And the R80.x study guide is for an old platform. Quantum is moving fast. Teaching them outdated architecture means you'll have to re-train them on the new stuff in six months, wasting all that "free" effort.

The official SK for the free trial, sk170456, is the necessary starting point, but you're right to look for a structured path. The documentation and individual SKs are a passive knowledge base. To build an active training program, you need to transform them into a sequence of deliberate, hands-on tasks.
I'd recommend constructing a lab workbook with modules that force interaction with core concepts. For gateway management, don't just have them install Gaia. Instead, create a lab module titled "Recovering from a Corrupted Gaia Installation" that walks them through using the backup USB and sk92715. For policy basics, a module on "Troubleshooting a Drop All Rule" that makes them use logs, SmartView Tracker, and sk35767 is more effective than just creating a policy.
The real TCO trap with a home lab isn't the hardware, it's the unguided exploration. A structured workbook built from public docs forces applied learning and reduces the senior admin's time investment to validation checks, not handholding. You can develop this workbook in parallel while their 30-day trial is active.
