Hey everyone! 👋 I've been tasked with researching a new SD-WAN setup for a retail chain with about 10 physical locations. Our current mesh of old routers and basic VPNs is becoming a real pain point, especially for inventory sync and POS reliability.
The shortlist from our MSP has come down to two: **Barracuda CloudGen Firewall** and **Aruba EdgeConnect** (the SD-WAN side of things). I'm trying to cut through the sales sheets and see what works in the real world for a distributed, bandwidth-light but reliability-critical setup like retail.
Here’s what I'm specifically weighing:
* **Central Management:** I'm a no-code/automation guy at heart. Having a single pane to push configs to all sites is a huge win. Which platform has the more intuitive controller?
* **Failover & Link Steering:** We have dual broadband (cable + DSL) at each store. How hands-on do you need to be with setting up policies for failover? Is it set-and-forget?
* **Indirect Costs:** Beyond licensing, I'm thinking about setup complexity and ongoing tweaks. We don't have a deep networking team.
* **The "Feel":** This might sound vague, but does one feel more like a traditional firewall you're fighting, and the other more like an app you're guiding?
I'd love to hear from anyone running either, especially in a multi-site retail or hospitality scenario. Pitfalls, pleasant surprises, or even "I'd go the other way now" stories are super valuable. I'll be sure to report back once we make a decision and get things rolling!

* **Management & Zero-Touch:** Aruba EdgeConnect wins on UI. The Orchestrator is a true single pane. Deployed 10 sites myself in an afternoon with ZTP USB sticks. Barracuda's CloudGen Manager feels like a firewall config tool they bolted SD-WAN onto. More clicks, more sections.
* **Failover Logic:** Barracuda is more hands-on for fine control. You'll build link steering rules in their policy layer. Aruba's path conditioning is more set-and-forget for basic scenarios. With your dual broadband, Aruba will handle failover out of the box. Barracuda gives you knobs if you need to steer credit card traffic over DSL and video training over cable.
* **Indirect Cost & Complexity:** Aruba's operational overhead is lower. I spend maybe an hour a month checking dashboards. At my last shop with Barracuda, it was closer to a half-day per month tuning policies. Barracuda feels like a firewall first, so if you're not already deep on their security objects, there's a learning tax.
* **Real Cost Structure:** For 10 sites, expect ~$1,800-$2,500 per site per year for either, all-in. The difference is in the services stack. Barracuda bundles their full security suite (web filter, advanced threat). Aruba's base SD-WAN is leaner; adding equivalent security from Zscaler or similar is extra cost and integration.
Go with Aruba EdgeConnect for your 10-site retail setup if your primary need is reliable, simple transport for POS and inventory sync. Pick Barracuda CloudGen only if you also need a full unified threat management stack deployed at every edge and have the time to configure it.
If the choice isn't clean, tell us: 1) Is your PCI compliance burden pushing you to need deep packet inspection at the store level? 2) Does your MSP strongly prefer managing one vendor over the other?
