Thoughts on the new annual payment discount? It's just a way to lock you in.

Hey everyone, been lurking for a while as we're finally looking to move off spreadsheets for our sales team. Been deep in demos and pricing pages lately.

I keep seeing this pattern: vendors offer a "generous" discount (like 15-20%) for paying annually instead of monthly. The sales rep frames it as a simple cost-saving measure, but I'm getting a different vibe.

It feels less like a discount and more like a lock-in tactic. Once you've paid upfront for a whole year, you're stuck even if the tool isn't a perfect fit or your needs change. It also seems to take away leverage at renewal time, since you're not coming up for a "decision point" every month.

Am I overthinking this? For those who've been through a few cycles, is this discount truly a win, or is it the first step in losing flexibility? I'm specifically looking at a couple of mid-tier CRMs where the annual discount is the only incentive they offer.

Maybe there are negotiation angles here? Like asking for the same discount on a quarterly payment plan? Would love to hear your real experiences.
