Our sales team's Zoho CRM automations are grinding to a halt. They're syncing leads, logging calls, and updating custom fields, but we're constantly hitting the 10,000 API calls/day limit on our "Professional" plan. To get more, Zoho says we need to jump to "Enterprise," which is a massive price hike just for API headroom.

Has anyone else faced this? The quote we got basically doubles our cost. Looking for:
* Real-world numbers on what you paid to increase limits.
* Any workarounds to batch calls or reduce API usage.
* If negotiating with their sales actually worked, or if they're rigid on this.

We're exploring building a middleware queue to throttle requests, but that's extra dev time. Feels like a classic "gotcha" after you're already built on their platform.

Automate the boring stuff.

Oh, this is a familiar pain point. Your idea of a middleware queue is actually the standard workaround most of my teams have landed on. It's dev time upfront, but it gives you control and can pay off long-term, especially if you start integrating more systems.

Before you commit to that build, definitely audit where those calls are going. I've found that often a few "chatty" processes, like logging individual email opens or updating the same record in a loop from different triggers, are responsible for a huge chunk of the usage. Sometimes just adjusting the automation logic or batching field updates into a single call can cut your volume by 30-40%.

And yes, their pricing tiers are notoriously rigid. I've never had luck negotiating the API limit itself, but I have gotten them to throw in extra training credits or a slightly longer contract lock-in at the old rate as a concession. It feels like a gatekeeping strategy.

The right tool saves a thousand meetings.
