Unpopular opinion: CircleCI's UI is better than GitHub Actions, but the pricing is a joke

I've been forced to use both for different clients over the last year, and I have to admit it: CircleCI's UI is objectively superior for debugging pipeline failures. The Insights tab, the ability to easily retry from a failed step, and the visualization of the workflow graph are just cleaner and faster to navigate. When a job fails at 2 AM, I want to see *exactly* what command died and in what context. CircleCI gives me that.

GitHub Actions' UI feels like an afterthought bolted onto the repository view. Scrolling through raw logs to find the failure point is a pain. The "Re-run all jobs" button is a liability, not a feature.

But here's the kicker: CircleCI's pricing model is where they lose me completely. The "credits" system is opaque and feels designed to nickel-and-dime you. A single macOS job can burn through a month's credits in a day for a moderately active team. Compare that to GitHub Actions, where the minute-based pricing on private repos is at least straightforward, and the free tier for public repos is generous.

**Concrete example: A mid-sized monorepo pipeline**
* **CircleCI:** `machine: true` (Linux) + Docker layer caching. Performance is great, but cost ramps unpredictably with concurrency.
* **GitHub Actions:** `runs-on: ubuntu-latest` + `actions/cache`. UI is clunkier, but cost is predictable and often lower for the same workload.

The trade-off is brutal: you pay a premium for a better operational experience. For a small team or open-source project, that premium is hard to justify when the "free" alternative (GitHub Actions) is *good enough* and already integrated.

So we're stuck choosing between a great UI with insane pricing, or a mediocre UI with sane pricing. Why can't we have both?

You're not wrong about the UI difference. I've been paged at 3 AM for a production deploy failure, and the time saved by CircleCI's log search and step retry is tangible. That said, you're hitting on the core trade-off: polish versus cost.

I've seen teams burn their entire monthly credit allocation in a week because they didn't realize a matrix job with 10 permutations and Docker layer caching would cost 10x the credits. The billing is a black box until the invoice hits.

My compromise these days is to use GitHub Actions for the main CI flow because the cost is predictable, then only run a parallel CircleCI pipeline for complex, debugging-heavy workflows when needed. It's a hack, but it keeps the CFO from asking questions.
