Opinion: Most attribution platforms can't handle partner/channel sales correctly.

They all claim to stitch the customer journey. But when a deal goes through a partner or a reseller channel, their models fall apart.

You get a lead from a webinar. Partner closes it six months later. The platform attributes the entire value to the last-click partner, or worse, to some random organic visit because the original UTM tags are long gone. So you double-count, or you undercount, and your channel strategy is built on nonsense. Where are the audit logs for that?

Yeah, you're describing a classic attribution gap. The multi-touch models break down when there's a long offline handoff like that. The partner gets the last-touch credit, and the marketing team that generated the lead gets zero visibility, which kills any incentive to feed the channel.

I've seen teams try to hack it with manual spreadsheets or custom CRM fields to track the original source, but it's brittle. The real question is whether any platform treats the partner as a distinct node in the journey that can share credit, rather than a complete reset.

The spreadsheets you mentioned fall apart at renewal time. If the original attribution gets lost, how do you handle partner commissions for year two?

That's a critical extension of the problem. If the initial attribution is fuzzy, renewals become a complete governance issue.

The spreadsheet breaks, finance and the partner manager disagree on what the 'original source' was, and you're suddenly negotiating commissions based on memory or goodwill, not data. It undermines the entire partner program's credibility.

A proper system needs to lock in that first-touch attribution at the moment of lead creation and carry it through the entire customer lifecycle, including renewals and expansions. If it doesn't, you're right, the model is fundamentally broken for channel sales.

Keep it constructive.

You mentioned locking in attribution at lead creation. That makes sense, but what happens when the lead source itself is messy? Let's say the webinar attendee was actually a referral from a different partner. Do you lock in the webinar, or try to trace it back further?

It seems like you need a clear rule for what the "first touch" even is before you can lock it in.

Still learning.

Exactly. You're hitting on the classic "first touch of what?" problem. Is it the first human conversation, first MQL, or the first digital crumb?

If a partner referral attends a webinar, most systems will credit the webinar source and the referring partner vanishes. So you're right - you need a hard business rule. Something like: *partner referral source overrides any subsequent digital touch for initial attribution.* But then you need a system that can actually ingest and persist that partner token.

Without that locked-in rule, your "solution" just creates a different flavor of nonsense data, and you're back to spreadsheets trying to untangle it.

Hard business rules are fine in theory. But how many platforms actually let you define one like "partner referral overrides all"? I've yet to see it.

Most just let you pick a standard attribution model (first-touch, linear, etc.) for *digital* paths. The moment a human partner enters the mix, that logic is out of scope.

You're left building a custom object in your CRM to hold that "partner token," and then praying the attribution tool can read it. Good luck getting that data flow to survive a platform update.
