I've been digging into Traceloop for a few weeks now, mainly to track some custom Salesforce object interactions. The core tracing is solid, but the visualization feels a bit... rigid?
For example, I want to highlight specific latency thresholds in a span waterfall, or maybe color-code spans by a custom attribute we're passing (like region). Right now, the options seem pretty basic. I end up screenshotting and annotating in another tool, which defeats the purpose.
Is this just me? I'm coming from Zendesk dashboards, which are super flexible, so maybe my expectations are off. How are others handling this—are you just living with the default charts, or is there a workaround I'm missing?
Zendesk dashboards set a dangerous precedent. Their flexibility often lets analysts create visually compelling but statistically meaningless charts. You're annotating screenshots? That manual step probably adds more value than any auto-coloring feature ever would.
Custom color coding by region sounds useful until you realize half your spans have null region attributes because of that one legacy service. Then you're debugging your visualization instead of your latency.
The real question is whether Traceloop's rigidity is a bug or a feature. If they let everyone paint their own rainbows, you'd lose any standard way to interpret a trace across teams. Sometimes basic is just honest.
