Pricing feedback: Is RunPod the cheapest for sporadic SD use?

Looking at my last three months of sporadic SDXL 1.0 runs, RunPod came in 40% cheaper than my old Paperspace setup. But my use case is very specific: I spin up a secure cloud instance for 2-3 hours at a time, maybe twice a week, to batch process images.

If you're doing similar sporadic work, the spot pricing model is key. RunPod's spot instances are significantly cheaper than on-demand, but you can get interrupted. For image gen, this is usually fine—just save checkpoints.

Here's my quick breakdown of the real costs for a typical SDXL run on an RTX 4090:

* **RunPod (Spot):** ~$0.44/hr
* **Vast.ai:** ~$0.48/hr (but more variable, network storage is extra)
* **Paperspace (Hourly):** ~$0.78/hr

The catch with RunPod is the persistent storage fee. If you want your models and outputs to stay between sessions, you're paying ~$3/month for 50GB. This adds up if you're only running a few hours a month.

My verdict: RunPod is cheapest for predictable, short-duration sessions where you can tolerate potential spot interruptions. If your "sporadic" use means one 30-minute session every two weeks, the storage fee might wipe out the savings. Consider your total monthly volume.

Has anyone done a direct cost comparison with Lambda Labs or other niche providers for this kind of intermittent workload? I'm skeptical of the "pay-as-you-go" services that charge per image; the math rarely works out for batches.

For truly sporadic use, some members on here have mentioned setting up a small, cheap S3 bucket elsewhere for long-term storage and only attaching a minimal volume to the compute instance for the active session. I'm new to using spot instances for this. When you get interrupted, how long does it typically take for the instance to become available again to resume your work? Is it usually minutes or could it be hours?

Interesting, I hadn't considered the checkpoint saves for interruptions. Do you just set the auto-save interval really low when you're on a spot instance, or is there a different workflow? I'm trying to gauge the practical overhead.

Need to see the actual billing screenshots to trust that. A lot of these claims forget the fees that hit the next month.

Your spot price list is fine, but you're missing the network transfer costs. Do you upload your base models each time or keep them on the persistent storage? Every GB in/out adds up, and RunPod's egress pricing isn't zero. For sporadic use, that could be the difference.

The $3/month for 50GB is the advertised rate. Are you actually using all 50GB, or is it mostly empty? If you're using 10GB, you're paying a premium per gigabyte. A cold storage bucket elsewhere might be cheaper for truly inactive data.

You're right about spot pricing being the key for sporadic use. The bigger question is what you define as "sporadic."

If you're doing two 3-hour sessions weekly, that's ~12 hours a month. At ~$0.44/hr, compute is ~$5.28. Add the $3 storage, and you're at $8.28. That's where the 40% savings likely come from, as your old Paperspace on-demand would have been near $9.36 just for compute.

But if "sporadic" drops to just a few hours total per month, the flat storage fee becomes a much larger percentage of the bill and can easily erase the compute savings. You need to run enough hours to absorb that fixed cost.
