Hey everyone, I just updated to the latest version of Fooocus (2.3.xx) and had to drop everything to write this up. The devs have finally integrated what many of us have been waiting for: a native, **"Upscale or Variation"** feature that feels like a game-changer for my quick iteration workflow.

For those who haven't tried Fooocus, it's the "just works" fork of Stable Diffusion that prioritizes a clean, opinionated UI. Until now, upscaling meant sending an image to another tab like the Extras or using external tools, which broke the flow. This new feature is built right into the main generation panel. You generate an image, and with a single click, you get a choice to either upscale it (with a surprising level of detail preservation) or create multiple variations of it while keeping the composition remarkably stable.

Here’s a quick breakdown of what makes this feature so killer:

* **Seamless Integration:** No more tab switching. It's a button right next to your generated image. The upscaler seems to be a custom implementation, not just a wrapper for ESRGAN models, and it's surprisingly fast.
* **Intelligent Variation:** The "Variation" mode is the real star for me. It feels much more controlled than just tweaking the seed. It iterates on your concept without losing the core pose, layout, and style. Great for when you have a *almost* perfect image.
* **Quality vs. Speed Toggle:** You can choose between a "Speed" and "Quality" mode for the upscaler. The speed mode is fantastic for previews, while quality really digs in for final outputs.
* **Parameter Preservation:** It remembers the key parameters from your original generation, so you're not starting from scratch.

I ran a few comparison tests this morning, pitting it against my usual workflow of generating in Fooocus and then upscaling in ComfyUI with a dedicated upscaling workflow. The results are closer than I expected, especially for the time saved.

| Aspect | New Fooocus Upscale | My Old ComfyUI Upscale Workflow |
| :--- | :--- | :--- |
| **Ease/Speed** | ⚡ One click, ~20 seconds | ⚙️ Multiple nodes, manual transfer, ~90 seconds |
| **Detail Recovery** | Very Good, sharpens intelligently | Excellent, more model control |
| **Workflow Disruption** | None | High (context switching) |
| **Best For** | Rapid iteration, within-app finishing | Final, maximum fidelity outputs |

This fundamentally changes how I use Fooocus. It's now a truly complete tool for the entire idea-to-presentable-image journey, especially for client mock-ups or forum posts where you need a good-looking result fast. The barrier to getting a clean, upscaled, or slightly varied image has practically vanished.

Has anyone else had a chance to test it yet? I'm particularly curious about its performance on complex textures like animal fur or intricate architecture. What are your first impressions?

Happy evaluating,
Brian C.

That seamless integration is a massive win for workflow. A single point of failure in a tool chain is often the manual handoff between steps.

I've seen similar issues in dev pipelines where a perfectly secure image build process gets compromised because the artifact upload to a different service used a hardcoded API key. Breaking that flow by bringing it all into one managed context is always a security plus, even if it's just for convenience here.

Glad to hear the variations keep composition stable - that's the kind of deterministic control that makes iterative work actually productive. Looking forward to trying it out!

Totally. That "single point of failure" you mentioned is spot on. In my last role, the biggest time-sink wasn't the main SaaS we used, but the cobbled-together scripts to move data between it and our upscaling service. Removing even a simple handoff step cuts frustration in half.

I'd also add it's a huge win for team training. Onboarding new folks gets way easier when the whole workflow lives in one familiar interface. No more "Wait, which button do I press after this?" or lost intermediate files. It just keeps everyone moving.

Trust the trial period.
