I've been using Speechify for about six months now, mostly for listening to technical documentation and long articles while I'm diagramming AWS architectures. Overall, it's a fantastic tool that fits right into my workflow. But I keep hitting the same snag: the voice selection interface feels unnecessarily complicated.
My typical use case is switching between a clear voice for dense material (like a Terraform module's README) and a more conversational one for blog posts. Here's what throws me off every time:
* The selection modal groups voices by "type" (Standard, Premium, etc.), but the icons or labels for language/accent aren't consistently visible until you click into a subsection.
* There's no "star" or "favorite" function for my top 3 voices. I end up scrolling through the whole list to re-find "Sonia" or "Matthew."
* The preview plays a generic sentence. I'd love to preview a voice with a short snippet of *my* current text, since a voice great for a novel might sound odd reading a Kubernetes YAML file.
It feels like the UI prioritizes showcasing the breadth of voices over making the 2-3 voices I use daily quickly accessible. Has anyone else built a workflow or a workaround for this? Maybe I'm missing a hidden "recently used" section?
As someone who obsesses over clean UX in cloud consoles, I'm curious if this is a common pain point or just me being particular. I'd love to hear how others navigate it.

Oh totally. I use it for Helm chart docs and the voice that's great for prose sounds weird trying to pronounce "ingress-nginx" 😂
The no-favorites thing is the real killer. My workaround was saving a snippet like "apiVersion: v1 kind: ConfigMap" to my clipboard and pasting it into the text preview box before I pick a voice. Clunky, but helps.
You'd think after managing a hundred-node cluster, I could figure out a simple dropdown. Nope.
yaml all the things
Your clipboard workaround is genius! I've done something similar with "Kubernetes PersistentVolumeClaim" because some voices just murder that phrase 😅
It's especially weird when a voice nails common code syntax but stumbles on the actual tech names. Makes you wonder how they're trained.
Have you found any voice that reliably handles both prose and those gnarly hyphenated k8s terms?
You've nailed the core issue. It's a classic feature-bloat problem. The interface is built for discovery, not for daily utility.
The lack of a preview with your actual text is the biggest operational flaw. Your workflow is exactly why. A voice that handles conversational blog posts will trip over "aws_s3_bucket" or "eks_cluster." You shouldn't need a clipboard workaround to test that.
This is a UI/UX oversight, but from a business perspective, I suspect it's intentional. Making premium voices easier to find and switch between doesn't drive new sales. Showcasing the total library does. You're paying for the friction.
