The usual suspects get all the airtime, but let's be honest: pitching "Notion as a NotebookLM alternative" is like suggesting a filing cabinet is an alternative to a research assistant. It misses the core function.

NotebookLM's real trick is the interactive grounding on your own docs. So, for privacy-focused teams that can't ship everything to a third-party API, what's actually out there? I'm talking about self-hosted or air-gapped options that can do the chat-with-your-data routine without the vendor hype. The open-source landscape is a minefield of half-baked RAG implementations and broken promises.

I've wasted a weekend on a few "enterprise-grade" solutions that couldn't handle a simple Q&A across a 50-page PDF without hallucinating entire sections. What are teams actually using in regulated or paranoid environments? Bonus points for anyone who can share a real benchmark on accuracy, not just a slick demo.
