Hey folks, I've been putting Leonardo AI through its paces for a few weeks now, specifically trying to integrate its image generation into some automated content pipelines. One metric I keep coming back to is efficiency: how many tries does it *really* take to get a usable asset?

For my workflow (generating consistent tech-themed backgrounds and icons), I'm finding the average is **3 to 5 prompts per final image**. That's after I've dialed in a decent base model and style. The breakdown usually looks something like:

* **Prompt 1:** Initial concept. Rarely perfect. Usually gets the theme but misses a detail (like "server rack" looking more like a bookshelf).
* **Prompt 2:** Refinement. Adjust keywords, add negative prompts. Gets closer, maybe 70% there.
* **Prompt 3-5:** Tweaking composition, style weight, or trying a different related model. One of these usually yields the "keeper."

When I started fresh with a new model? That number easily doubled. A lot of it is learning the specific vocabulary and quirks of each model (like Phoenix vs. Leonardo Diffusion). The Alchemy refiner is a game-changer for usability on the first try, though.

I'm curious about your experiences, especially if you're using it for practical, repeatable outputs. Are you batch-generating 20 images and picking the best, or iterating on a single concept until it's perfect? What's your "prompts-to-usable" ratio for your projects?

Keep automating!

Your 3-5 figure is a best-case scenario and frankly optimistic for any serious production use. You're assuming the final asset is actually "usable" beyond just looking right. If you're slotting this into any pipeline touching customer data or branding, you've got a whole other layer of problems.

You said "usable asset" but didn't mention compliance. Who's auditing the training data for that model you're using? Can you prove the output doesn't infringe on copyrighted material? For every "keeper" from your 5 prompts, you've generated 4 other images that are now stored somewhere. That's a data processing and retention issue nobody thinks about until they get a GDPR deletion request.

The real metric isn't prompts to a pretty picture. It's prompts to a compliant, legally vetted, and secure asset. That number is often "infinite" because the tools can't guarantee it.
