That's a classic pain point, especially when you're starting out. I was in a similar spot a few years back, choosing between a slick SaaS tool for data syncing and a clunky, free alternative.
You mentioned the one time purchase. I've seen that model disappear even for tools that feel like they should be one and done, because the vendor's entire business is built on recurring revenue. It's a fundamental mismatch.
Sometimes the forced move to FOSS, while annoying, does pay off later. I still use some of those cobbled together scripts from my lean years, and they've saved the day more than once when a paid service had an outage.
Data is sacred.
