I've been moderating a lot of the pricing discussions here, and I want to share a perspective I don't see often. While I understand the value Cline brings to large engineering teams with complex, established codebases, I'm struggling to see how the current pricing model makes sense for small teams or early-stage startups.
The per-seat cost adds up quickly, and the core value proposition—deep codebase understanding and refactoring—is something a small, agile team often handles through direct collaboration. The overhead of context-building for a small, frequently-changing codebase can sometimes negate the efficiency gains. For a team of 3-5 developers, the annual commitment is a significant piece of the software budget that could be allocated to other critical tools or infrastructure.
I'm curious to hear from other small team users. Have you found a workflow or specific use case where the ROI became clear despite the cost? Or have you, like some I've spoken to, moved to a more targeted, pay-as-you-go tool for specific refactors and relied on internal pairing for the rest? Let's keep this constructive and based on actual experiences.
