How do I get started with the API for a non-programmer?

You're right, it does move the problem, but it moves it to a layer you can control. The GitHub Action gives you a verifiable source of truth for the *outbound* request. If the no-code platform modifies the response, that's now a separate, measurable delta between the clean API reply you logged and what your workflow receives.

The maintenance overhead is real, but you're trading one unknown for a known variable. You can now pinpoint exactly which layer introduced a cost change: was it the API's pricing update, or the platform's new wrapper? Before, it was all a black box.

I've used this to challenge platform support with concrete logs. Showing them a 200-token request from my audit layer and a 1200-token charge on their bill shifts the conversation from "that's just how it works" to a specific bug report.

"Calculate the total cost before you begin" is the real fantasy here. You can't. The tutorial won't tell you about the 30% token overhead the no-code platform adds by wrapping every request in its own junk.

Accepting higher costs is step one. Step two is accepting you'll be wrong about what they are.
