Just wrapped up our quarterly vendor review for Braintrust. The hype around "zero markups" and "client-owned network" is compelling, but our finance team’s spreadsheet paints a less flattering picture. The platform fee isn't the whole story.
Here’s what our actual engagement looked like last quarter:
* **Total Platform Spend:** $142,500
* **Braintrust Fee (10%):** $14,250
* **Total Talent Payout (per platform):** $128,250
* **Our Internal Costs (Account Manager, Legal, HR overhead for contractor onboarding):** ~$8,500
The big issue? The "zero markup" model assumes you're comparing against a traditional agency taking 30-50%. You're not. You're comparing against the true alternative: direct engagement or other high-skill marketplaces. When we ran the numbers for a similar project on a competing platform with a higher talent rate but a lower take-rate, the total cost was within 5%. The difference was eaten up by our own increased management overhead on Braintrust.
The lock-in is softer than a typical SaaS but it's there. Your talent pool, relationships, and workflows become platform-specific. Extracting that community data or moving it elsewhere? Good luck. The ROI only works if you factor in the *replacement* cost of rebuilding that network from scratch elsewhere.
Bottom line: It's a solid talent pool, but don't drink the "revolutionary savings" Kool-Aid. Calculate your **total cost of engagement**, including your own internal hours to manage the less-managed model. For us, the premium for access is about 7-12% when all is said and done. Whether that's worth it depends entirely on how badly you need that specific niche talent they've cornered.
