Hey everyone, I've been knee-deep in evaluating a few GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) tools for our analytics dashboards at work. The hype is real, but the practical checklist for what actually matters can get lost.

For folks like us managing data products, reports, or even documentation that we want discovered via AI assistants (ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude), I think it boils down to three core feature categories:

**1. Content Analysis & Scoring**
This isn't just keyword density. A good tool should tell you:
* How your existing content (like Metabase dashboard descriptions or Looker explore notes) is likely to be "understood" by these AI models.
* Specific suggestions for improving clarity, context, and factual grounding within your text. For example, should you add more structured data definitions?
* A score or benchmark against competitors' public documentation.

**2. Ongoing Monitoring**
This is crucial! It's not a one-time fix. You need:
* Alerts when your key content pages drop in AI-generated answers (think of it like SEO rank tracking, but for AI).
* Visibility into which AI tools (Perplexity, Copilot, etc.) are sourcing your content and how.
* Tracking for "zero-click" knowledge—when your data is used in an answer but the user doesn't visit your site.

**3. Stack Integration & Optimization**
The tool must play nice with our existing workflows. For me, that means:
* Can it analyze SQL comments or data pipeline documentation (e.g., in dbt) for optimization opportunities?
* Does it offer actionable recommendations, not just theory? For instance: "Add a FAQ section with these three precise questions to increase citation likelihood."
* Cost transparency. Does it use its own LLM calls? How does that impact my monthly bill?

I'm currently testing a couple of platforms against this checklist. The monitoring piece is often the weakest link—many are just snapshot auditors.

Has anyone else put a GEO tool through its paces? I'm particularly interested if any integrate directly with BI platforms (Tableau Server, Looker) to analyze published workbook metadata.

Cheers, David
