Just got the renewal quote for our 50-person engineering team's Slack workspace. When I saw that total, I spilled my coffee. For a glorified IRC client with emoji reactions and giphy, it's starting to feel like we're funding a small moon mission.
The per-seat cost stacks up *fast*, and you hit a point where you have to ask: are the productivity gains from threaded conversations and 90,000 integrations really moving the needle enough to justify that invoice? Especially when half those integrations break and need a `/remind` to check the logs. The "free" tier is a non-starter for us—no meaningful history search is a dealbreaker.
I've been poking at some alternatives. Here's a quick, brutally honest look from a DevOps perspective:
**Mattermost** (self-hosted): It's basically Slack, but you get to babysit it. Great if you're already a Kubernetes shop and want to treat chat like cattle. You'll trade the Slack bill for your team's time managing Yet Another Helm chart. Cost-wise, it's just infra plus your sanity.

The real question I'm wrestling with is whether we're just too deep in the ecosystem. Are the bots and workflows we've built actually saving time, or just creating a fancy, expensive notification sink? 🤔
