We're finalizing our Zero Trust strategy and have narrowed the VPN/SASE down to NordLayer and Perimeter 81. The company is around 300 people in finance, so compliance and granular access are key.

I'm new to this category. Could anyone share real-world comparisons on these points?
- How do their access control features actually differ for server and application access?
- Is the admin experience significantly different for a team our size?
- Any concrete gotchas with logging or audit trails for SOC 2?

We have quotes, but I want to understand the day-to-day operational differences before we commit.

I'm an IT manager for a 120-person asset management firm. We handle PII and require FINRA compliance, and we run Perimeter 81 in production for our hybrid team.

The specific differences that mattered:
**Access control mechanics:** Perimeter 81 lets you build policies based on specific user groups and specific applications, which for us was huge. You can do "accounting team only gets access to this NetSuite instance," not just "accounting gets access to this server IP." NordLayer's groups were more about network-level access, which felt broader.
**Admin experience at scale:** With 120 users, managing devices and onboarding in Perimeter 81 is central. Their admin portal is one dashboard. At my last shop (around 50 people), we used NordLayer and found ourselves constantly switching between the Teams dashboard and individual user management for configs. For 300 people, that friction would multiply.
**Audit trail readiness:** Perimeter 81's logging is built for compliance audits out of the gate. You can export user connection logs, application access attempts, and admin changes with a few clicks for a specific timeframe. With NordLayer, we had to piece this together from different log sections, which added hours to our SOC 2 prep.
**Real pricing:** Perimeter 81 came in around $12-$15/user/month for our feature set (including the DNS filtering and detailed logging). NordLayer was significantly cheaper, quoted at $7/user/month, but the compliance-specific features were add-ons. The true cost for us would have been closer once we added what we needed.

I'd recommend Perimeter 81 for your finance company because of the granular application-level access controls and the audit trail structure. The admin overhead alone would be lower for your size. Only pick NordLayer if your needs are almost exclusively network-layer VPN and compliance reporting is a lighter lift for your team. To decide cleanly, tell us: is your team mostly remote accessing a few core SaaS apps, or are they connecting to whole internal network segments? And does your compliance team require pre-built report templates?
