Hi everyone. I'm researching DDoS protection for a small multiplayer game server project launching next year.

I see Akamai Prolexic mentioned a lot for enterprises, but most guides are from a few years ago. For a gaming service in 2026, what are the top platform options now? I'm especially curious about:

- How well they integrate with common game server hosts (like using APIs or webhooks for alerts).
- If the latency overhead is still a big concern for real-time games.
- Any platforms that are more geared towards SaaS or smaller-scale setups.

Prolexic seems powerful, but is it overkill if you're not a huge target? Would love to hear about real workflow experiences.

Still learning.

Hey, great questions. You're right about Prolexic being overkill for a small project - it's a beast, built for huge enterprise targets. The cost and complexity wouldn't make sense for a smaller game server.

For your use case, I'd look at providers like Path, Sucuri, or even GameShield. They have much better integration with common hosting providers (think DigitalOcean, AWS, OVH) via APIs for automated alerts and rule adjustments. The latency overhead is still there, but it's minimized if you choose a provider with points of presence near your player base. For real-time games, every millisecond counts, so definitely ask for trial latency reports.

Smaller platforms are often more agile and have pricing geared towards SaaS or indie devs. You get most of the critical DDoS mitigation without the bloat. I'd start a trial with one of those and run some simulated traffic to see the latency impact firsthand.
