I’ve spent the last week evaluating Pipedrive alongside two other mid-market CRM platforms, and my initial experience with their onboarding process was unexpectedly disjointed. While I appreciate a guided setup, the sequence of steps seemed to conflict with a realistic sales pipeline configuration.
Specifically, I encountered three friction points:
* The initial wizard pushed for custom field creation before allowing me to import my existing lead list. This resulted in having to map fields twice—once during the import and again when the wizard later prompted for pipeline stages.
* The default pipeline template uses terminology that doesn't align with common B2B logistics sales cycles (e.g., "Qualified" vs. "Needs Assessment"). Adjusting these stages was possible, but the interface for doing so was buried in a settings menu separate from the onboarding flow.
* Email integration was presented as a primary step, yet connecting our company’s Google Workspace required admin permissions that our sales team lead didn’t possess at that moment. The process stalled without a clear "skip and return later" option.
Has anyone else documented a similar experience? I’m compiling a workflow efficiency scorecard for my comparison, and the onboarding complexity metric is proving significant. I’m particularly interested in whether this initial complexity is offset by long-term administrative efficiency, or if it’s simply a hurdle one must overcome.
Measure twice, buy once.
