I’ve been using PromptLayer for a few months now to manage our marketing automation prompts, and overall, it’s been solid for tracking costs and latency. However, I’ve hit a specific snag in my auditing process.
When I use dynamic templates—where variables like `{customer_name}`, `{product}`, or `{campaign_type}` are filled from our CRM—the logs in PromptLayer show the template *with the placeholders*, not the final, filled-in prompt that was actually sent to the LLM. This makes it difficult to debug unexpected outputs or to verify the exact input for compliance.
My workflow looks something like this:
- A Python script pulls lead data from our CRM.
- It formats a base prompt template with that data.
- The script calls `openai.ChatCompletion.create`, wrapped with PromptLayer.
In the PromptLayer dashboard, I see the call and the template, but the critical piece (the actual text string received by the model) is missing.
Has anyone found a reliable method to log the *fully resolved* prompt? I’m considering:
- Manually logging the final string to a separate service before the API call, which seems to defeat the purpose.
- Perhaps using PromptLayer’s metadata or tags in a specific way?
- Maybe there’s a configuration in the `pl.track` function I’ve overlooked?
I’d appreciate any insights, especially from others who use dynamic content for email copy generation or personalized outreach. What’s your approach for ensuring a complete audit trail?
